Such a great resource and the trails are excellent. Do not forget to say hello to Aristophanes the Raven!

Portland's Audubon is located in Forest Park - one of the largest city parks in the country. Because it's a forested park there are hiking trails and wild animals nearby. The Society office offers loads of bird watching gear, books, and classes. Cool t-shirts too. They sometimes bring out one of their birds-of-prey (rescued animals that could not live in the wild). So cool to see a great horned owl, raven, or pergrine falcon up close.

This morning at around 11 am my mom whom is terminally ill from brain cancer saw a adolescent Sea-gull struggling in the street with a wing injury most likely caused from getting hit by a vehicle. Despite being tired from her condition she dropped what she was doing and very carefully aided the bird onto the sidewalk, gave the bird some crackers and then immediately called the Audobon Soceity for help. My mom of course stayed w/ and comforted the bird until someone came, this is where I start to get disturbed. Not only was the guy extremely rude to my mom but also had violently grabbed the poor Sea-gull by the wing that had sustained injury, DESPITE her making it very clear to this gentleman that wing was bent back and hurt. He then threw the bird into a small cardboard box with two small holes on the top. Later in the day we followed up on the birds condition and they unfortunately claimed due to his injury that he was immediately euthanized. April of 2009 I also found another bird in duress, this time it was a beautiful adult Blue Heron that had his wing stuck in an cyclone fence. Me and a neighbor rushed the bird to the Audubon society of portland only to find out later on in that day as well that the blue Heron was euthanized. Look I get it, some situations are hard to help with the circumstances and the resources that are assumed when helping any animals. BUT I sincerely believe that more could of been done for both birds aforementioned and that breaks not only my heart but also my moms heart who sees life more precious than we can possibly know. I wish there was some oversight, anything. Shame on those that abuse the position of helping.

Lovely facility staffed by passionate people. Loved the trails. They were so peaceful, and yet so close to the city. Say hello to Aristophanes!

My 5 yo calls it the Nature Zoo and we enjoy it every time! Great for introducing kids to hiking and exploring in nature. We love when the personnel have the birds outside (owl, falcon, etc) and kids can see them closer and ask questions.
