B4H is a wonderful, wonderful organization. Run by people who really care -- both about doing good stuff for the world (i.e., rehabbing donated bikes and giving them away or selling them for cheap to people who couldn't afford a bike otherwise) /and/ about educating their own volunteers. And everyone there is a volunteer. (Though some are also professional mechanics at other local bike shops.)

Anyway, it's a wonderful place.

Great bunch of folks there at Bikes For Humanity. Laid back place, lots of fun to hang out and learn about repairing bikes. The founders really care deeply about helping out the community and getting people great bikes they need for commuting. This is one place where the volunteers learn some very valuable and marketable skills. Highly recommend checking them out if you're interested in volunteering and learning more about bicycles.

They have great open hours, including evenings.

If you want a new bike, don't bother them. If you want to get into pdx commuting, bikes, advocacy, mechanics and community...well this is your place.

Their 8-week professional bike maintenance class is open to anyone and also, unbelievably, completely free. It is taught by professional mechanics and is top-quality. The only payment they ask for is 10+ hours of volunteer time, which isn't much. And after the class, you'll want to keep learning from them in the shop anyway. And you'll realize how much better your own bike could be if you just put a few hours into it.

The basics: 2 hours of volunteering gets you 1 hour of stand time (and advice!). Plus, they have free bike classes, below-market-rate bikes and parts and awesome volunteer opportunities.

Can't wait for the grand opening!!!

I look forward to working with them and updating my review!

Bike #1 was totally bent and the spikes all screwed up. So I went there to get it fixed on a Sunday afternoon. Ended up buying bike #2, signing up as a volunteer to learn how to fix bike #1 and even got to learn the difference between tube sizes and the components of a fork. This is a real non-profit, they are there for the community and they look forward to help you in any way.

I haven't been yet, but wanted to put this out there, I just found on their Facebook they are now closed Monday-Wednesday. As of 8/15.

And haven't changed their webpage or google listing yet if you have trouble that'd be why.
