Oh, and during the drop-off I got to watch one of the other mechanics give an incredibly polished kiddy lecture on how tires work to a boy who had ridden over the business end of a nail. That's awesome, maybe that kid won't grow up to be the kind of lazy bike owner that I am.
Overall this was a very good experience, and my bike is riding very well. Given that they're also close to my home, they'll be my bike mechanics from here on out.
I originally meant to drop my bike off for an annual tune-up across the street, but they had unexpectedly closed early and so I found myself in search of a different shop. Reviews here said that Bike Gallery Hollywood is pricey, and yeah, I could probably have gotten a tune-up for $20 less elsewhere, but that's not a steep price to pay for this level of service.
I found a really great bike with the help of Nathan at the Hollywood location. He was super helpful, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. It was a great deal, and I felt like I got exactly what I wanted, no unnecessary upgrades. Thank you, and I'll be back if I ever need help!
Went in with every intention of buying one of three bikes I first searched up on line. After about 15 minutes and walking around looking at all the bikes three times over I decided to leave. Not that I changed my mind about getting a bike, rather, no single employee in that time even acknowledged that I existed. As I left clearly bothered one employee tried to stop me by the door. Too little to late.
Was gonna rent a bike for a week to get around town. Called a couple hours ahead of time to ask about inventory and pick up. Said I’d be showing up just before 7p. I arrived in a carshare around 650p, but they refused to rent me a bike because “it would take too long.” I would’ve just come in the morning if they had told it me the timing wouldn’t work. So not only did their customer service philosophy keep me from getting a bike, it cost me a trip there and back. Not the absolute worst experience, but pretty darn disappointing.
Mechanic Brian gave me a careful rundown of what might or might not be involved in the tune-up, and an estimate that included parts that may or may not end up being necessary. They estimated a turn-around of 24 hours and pulled it off in 18 hours. The estimate on additional parts was also higher than necessary, and the actual bill came in as quite reasonable for the work. Finally, Brian gave me a careful and very intuitive lecture on what my gears are and how to use them to make riding easier and to make my parts last longer. That's good, I should really start biking like an adult and not a 12 yo with a single speed.
Consistently excellent, high quality service. These folks have worked on two bikes of mine and always do it with a smile. They are knowledge, happy to recommend things (within your budget), and quick to go above and beyond what you've asked. If you're short on cash, they are great in helping you figure out what repairs need to be done right now and what you can wait on a bit longer. I know there a lot of great bike shops in Portland, but this is one of my favorites.
