I go to swing dances at the Scottish Rite on Sunday nights. It's a really cool place; it gives you the feeling that it's a place where a secret society once held meetings. The ballroom where dances happen is pretty nice (although a bit cramped when there are a lot of dancers in there). They do need to add more water fountains, however. There is currently only one, and usually a long line of thirsty dancers waiting for water. The massive framed photos of past members dating back 100 years is pretty interesting too, it gives the place a sense of history.

Horrible experience with an aggressive doorman/caretaker at the Sunday swing dance. I am 15 years old. He threatened me because I accidentally broke a light bulb in the women's restroom while practicing swing dance moves with my 2 female friends. He weighs around 220 pounds - I'm 115 pounds. He shouted at me, stood over me, wouldn't let me leave to call my mom, wanted my "financial details". Three times I asked him how much the repair cost and he wouldn't tell me, just kept saying I was in big trouble. I thought he was going to hit me. I was so scared, finally got to speak to my mom, who came down and sorted him out, big sexist bully that he is, I hope he gets fired, what a way to treat people. Turns out the repair was $7.00. Really? What a fuss over $7.00! The woman who runs the swing club sided with him...shame on her. I expected better treatment. Aim low if you go here. They don't come any lower than my experience.

The Portland Scottish Rite Center is one of Portland's most-hidden treasures. The auditorium seats 570 people, the acoustics are outstanding and they have put in a new sound system (fall 09). It is right on the MAX line and there is plenty of on-street and lot parking. Check it out for a concert some time or hold an event or wedding there. Great place.

I appreciate a historic building used by multiple groups, several who try to help their community with charity or events.

Been once, swing dancing, going again tonight. Had a Mason friend that needed stagework help there, years ago, so I've been all over the building--nice place, kinda interesting, architecturally. But the swing dancing, well ... Just really nice folks. I'm pretty okay at swing, Lindy kicks my butt (I'll get there yet!), but these are people out to have fun, not strut their stuff. Beautiful vibe. Don't go to hook up; just have fun and you'll leave really happy.
