If you love books, or even just like books a little, go here, you won't be disappointed. Seemingly endless selection, lots of somethings for everyone, and a pretty big selection of souvenirs and non-com items as well. Lots of used books at incredibly low prices, if you're a bibliophile visiting from out of town, bring an extra bag with you. I'd like to move into their rare book room if I could convince them to accept tenants, first editions of Dickens classics melted my heart. Nice coffee shop, they let you bring some books in there so no reason not to enjoy a read with your cuppa.

If you can handle crowds, then you will be hard-pressed to find a cooler bookstore in Oregon-- maybe even the whole Pacific NW? I have been here a few times now and am slowly growing accustomed to the bustling crowds. Powell's is not a low-key bookstore, so if you are hoping for a more nook-type shop, head elsewhere. For as huge as this place is, though, it doesn't feel like a warehouse; it has a lot of character, knowledgeable staff, and an ENORMOUS selection of books, graphic novels, gifts, and maps, among (lots of) other stuff. If you want a Portland souvenir, especially for the book-philes in your life, this is a great place to find one.

If you like books GO. Period. It smells SO good in there, I love the smell of new books, and used books and levels and miles of books. It really is a paradise for those who love books and reading. Powell's isn't just a cool place to visit because of its history, or something fun to do in PDX, although PLEASE visit for those reasons; BUT visit it because for those of us who love books it will give you peace to realize that at the LEAST this bookstore is going nowhere! I just spent over $200 on books, but while I shopped, I checked prices on Amazon and they were the same. That said, please GO and please SHOP! Keep this place an amazing Portland institution!

Love love love this place. Lots of good books but a good mix of souvenir type items too, just wish there was more parking. I love how many books there actually are and the staff is awesome at answering questions or helping you find something. Most are also well read people do they can make okay recommendations for their favorite genre.

This bookstore is a beloved landmark that has earned its reputation. A city block in size, this store is both vast and cozy, full of nooks and crannies in which to pause and read. Used books and new books share shelves seamlessly, making it easy to find what you're looking for. Browse, buy, stay for a snack; this is the best bookstore in the city.
